“The Work is a simple yet powerful process of inquiry that teaches you to identify and question the thoughts that cause all the suffering in the world. It’s a way to understand what’s hurting you, and to address the cause of your problems with clarity.”
One of the most important aspects of yogic philosophy is the concept of self study. Through self study we become familiar with all aspects of ourselves and the inner workings of our mind. By recognizing our patterns of thought, behavior and action we come to a deeper understanding of ourselves and how we perceive or interact with the world.
One of the many tools we can use to facilitate our introspective study is through a self-inquiry practice called “The Work”, developed by Byron Katie.
So much of our culture drives us to constantly focus our energy and attention outside of ourselves. Self study and inquiry is an effort to draw that attention back inside to help us become more aware how our thoughts, judgments, memories, stories and fears influence our actions. The Work is a simple, profound and effective practice that assists in this process.
Most of us do not take time to pause and reflect on the battle constantly going on inside of us. What is it that causes you stress? What beliefs do you have around what “should” or “shouldn’t” be? What beliefs or fears do you have that cause you to suffer? How do you react when you believe you are right and someone else is wrong? How do you treat that other person? How do you treat yourself?
By utilizing techniques from “The Work” you begin to identify what is at the root of your personal suffering and broaden your scope of view, looking at these causes with fresh eyes. You are encouraged to approach these root causes from different perspectives, soften your approach as you stop struggling against “what is”, and finally come to acceptance with peaceful understanding of things are in this moment.
For people all over the world, regular practice of The Work has reduced personal suffering and helped cultivate more inner peace. By holding a mirror up to our inner selves we begin to have a profound understanding of how our perceptions color the way we interact with ourselves and world around us. Cultivating awareness is a lifetime commitment. “The Work” can provide you with the tools to enhance your lifelong practice of self study.
But don’t take our word for it, try it for yourself…

TESTIMONIAL
“The other day I was holding my two year old niece, Abigail, when she discovered a ‘beauty mark’ I have on my face. She didn’t ask me what it was; in fact we exchanged no words during what occurred next. She held my face in her tiny hands & examined my mole very intently. She proceeded to try to wipe it off of my face, and then pick it off. With no luck removing it she finally looked at the mark very hard with a perplexed scowl on her face, trying to remove it once more, again with no luck.
After giving up on trying to physically remove my beauty mark she stared at it for several moments with her brow furrowed. In the next moment her face soften, she leaned in and kissed my mole and without saying a word smiled at me with her head cocked to one side before jumping down and running off to play.
Abby’s process of intense inquiry and final acceptance of my beauty mark is similar to what I have learned to do with “The Work.” The Work helps me to inquire, nurture, broaden & soften my perceptions allowing me to find space to kiss & love what is or isn’t. When confronted with what I think should or shouldn’t be (an argument with reality), The Work has given me the tools to observe what is before me, to question it, and also to stare and “pick” at it. I take in the reaction I am having around it, examine why I feel opposed to what is or isn’t, find the reality in it and ultimately, like Abigail’s kiss, peacefully accept what is or isn’t on my own terms.”

Teachers
Cori Martinez completed “The School for The Work” with Byron Katie in 2010 and has begun to integrate this technique into many Asha Yoga programs. Cori has found “The Work” to be one of the most effective and powerful self-inquiry techniques she has experienced for “waking up the mind to itself” and finding the freedom and “profound peace” that comes from the absence of avidya, or “incorrect understanding”. You can experience it in Living Yoga, the Advanced Studies and Teacher Training Program and upcoming workshops.
